A supplier must possess and apply the knowledge and skill reasonably necessary for the service and perform with proper care in a workmanlike manner. Honest effort, an inexperienced employee or a supplier's internal mistake does not excuse a failure.

Where the consumer makes a particular purpose or desired result known, the services and resulting product must be reasonably fit to achieve it. The guarantee does not apply where the consumer did not rely on the supplier or reliance was unreasonable. Architects and engineers are excluded from the s 61 fitness/result guarantees but remain subject to s 60.

The reasonable-time guarantee applies only where the contract neither fixes the completion time nor provides a mechanism for determining it. If the parties have agreed a time or an operative method, the contract controls first.

The services guarantees generally exclude financial services, insurance, employment contracts and certain business transport or storage. Section 64 prevents ordinary exclusion, s 64A may permit limited remedies for non-household services, CCA s 139A can affect recreational services, and ACL s 275 can import applicable State or Territory liability limits.
